School Lunches

King’s House School believes that great learning should be supported by a healthy diet to help maintain energy levels and concentration throughout the school day. Research indicates that a healthy diet benefits motivation and behaviour as well as the ability to learn and achieve.

Since transferring the Catering provision in-house in 2014, King’s House has had more freedom than a contract caterer. Freedom to write our own menus, freedom to source from suppliers who guarantee quality over price and regular opportunities for the School’s Catering Council to feedback and proffer ideas. We also strive to continuously improve what we do and this is reflected in having recently been awarded a Bronze Award from the Soil Association for Food for Life Served Here.

Food for Life Served Here is a standard developed by the Soil Association to promote healthy eating by using freshly prepared seasonal ingredients, free from undesirable trans fats, sweeteners and additives and sourced from local, ethical and sustainable sources.

Our menus are written to balance all food groups while a proportion are made using Organic ingredients. This award is something we are very proud of and reflects the efforts of the Catering Department to continuously improve the wellbeing of the pupils through good food. For more information please see the Food for Life website.

The School’s butcher only supplies Red Tractor or RSPCA assured meats as a minimum, all with full traceability back to the field. Our local vegetable supplier hand picks the fruit and vegetables fresh from the market every morning, selecting items from neighbouring counties where possible. All our suppliers have to pass stringent food hygiene and health and safety checks before the School contracts them. All our products are GM free and fish MSC accredited.

With a catering team of nine led by the Catering Manager, the School’s seasonal menu is freshly prepared from scratch every day. The basic principle of any nutritious main course is to balance proteins, carbohydrates and vegetables but we also offer a freshly prepared vegetarian option, vitamin-rich soup, a wide variety of fresh salads, cold meats, jacket potatoes, desserts, yogurt and fresh fruit.

From Reception and throughout the Junior Department the boys are encouraged to try new foods, however if they really don’t like something there is always an alternative on offer.

As the boys progress into the Senior Department they have more freedom serving themselves from the large variety of produce on offer. In addition, regular theme days enhance the boys’ knowledge of food from other countries and cultures.

Children in the Nursery Department can bring a packed lunch from home to enjoy during Lunch Club if they are staying for a longer day.

We maintain the highest level of food hygiene standards with a five out of five-star rating from the Environmental Health Officer. There is a strict no nuts policy to ensure child safety, while all other allergies, food intolerances and special diets are catered for.
